Don Bushyager smiles as he recalls the way his company, BBR Services LP, used to do their bookkeeping.  “I did it myself, and I did it as simply as I could,” he says frankly.  “Basically, all it amounted to was balancing the checkbook, reporting the payroll and a few other minor tasks.”  BBR Services LP provides employee benefit products such as health insurance, retirement plans and consulting services.  As Chief Administrative Officer, Bushyager was too busy managing the day-to-day activities of the business to dig below the surface of the firm’s weekly bookkeeping.

All that changed two years ago, when BBR Services LP entered into a partnership arrangement with an outside owner.  “Suddenly that detailed record-keeping that we lacked became imperative,” he explains.  Their new partner had been utilizing Bookminders for years and Bushyager decided to follow suit. He quickly realized the benefits of outsourcing BBR’s accounting function.

“We didn’t feel that it was a job that would require someone full-time,” he explains.  “It seemed much more logical to outsource.  We already had experience outsourcing both our payroll and some portions of our third party administration services, so I felt very comfortable with the concept.”

Over time, the benefits Bushyager has seen in the decision have expanded. “Bookminders has been an excellent solution for us because it’s met the need we had to have more detailed financial information.  We have a far better understanding of where our income is coming from and how much we’re compensating those we outsource to.  We have the opportunity to see our financial picture in a way we never would have otherwise, and that’s a bonus we didn’t initially expect from Bookminders.”

Most of all, Bushyager has developed an appreciation for the relationship that has developed between Bookminders and BBR Services LP.  “I appreciate knowing that we’re not just feeding numbers into cyberspace,” he explains.  “The face-to-face meetings we have with our bookminder each week have enabled a very trusting, comfortable rapport.  With other organizations that we outsource to, we simply don’t have that personal relationship.  With Bookminders I know who I am dealing with and they know me.  It’s just a very comfortable way of doing business.”
